Intergenerational Program

A Place to Grow Childcare Centre is privileged to be involved in an Intergenerational program with the Kinsmen Lodge, a residence for Elders, located across the street from Surrey Memorial Hospital. The Kinsmen Lodge is home to 144 residents, 120 staff, 100 volunteers, 6 birds, 4 cats, 3 rabbits and a beautiful garden tended and enjoyed by all the residents.

We walk a small group of children from our 3-5 Preschool program to Kinsmen Lodge once a month to participate in fun activities; music, art, games, gardening and shared snacks with the Elders. Often a small group of our infants or toddlers will join in for a quick hello to the Elders as well. Additionally, at least once a year the Elders take a bus over to our program for a visit at A Place to Grow.

We have found these experiences to be extremely engaging for all the children and the Elders. The children often request to go and visit with Elders and there have been obvious benefits to the Elders as well.
